MOLECULAR POLARITYFIELD NOTE 174 / 175
Is XeF2 polar or nonpolar?
XeF2 is nonpolar because two equal Xe–F bonds point in opposite directions along a straight line.

Why XeF2 is nonpolar
Xenon has two bonding regions and three lone pairs in the conventional VSEPR picture. The lone pairs occupy equatorial positions, leaving the two fluorines opposite each other and their equal bond dipoles canceled.
What to notice
XeF2 is linear despite five electron regions around Xe. The electron-pair geometry is trigonal bipyramidal, but the two visible bonded atoms form a line.
Common questions about XeF2
- 01
What does the Lewis structure of XeF2 show?
Xe makes two Xe–F single bonds and keeps three lone pairs. Each fluorine has three lone pairs.
- 02
What is the molecular geometry of XeF2?
XeF2 has a linear molecular geometry. The 3D model shows representative bond angles of 180°. These are angles in the illustrative model, not experimental measurements.
- 03
What is the molar mass of XeF2?
XeF2 has an approximate molar mass of 169.29 g/mol, calculated from its formula using abridged standard atomic weights. Natural isotope variation can change the last digits.
