MOLECULAR POLARITYFIELD NOTE 169 / 175
Is SOF2 polar or nonpolar?
SOF2 is polar because its S=O and two S–F bonds occupy unequal directions around sulfur.

Why SOF2 is polar
In a common Lewis model sulfur bonds to oxygen and two fluorines and retains one lone pair. The resulting pyramidal molecular shape has unlike bond dipoles that cannot cancel to zero.
What to notice
The two F atoms in SOF2 are equivalent to each other, but the third attached atom is O. That is different from the three equal arms of planar SO3.
Common questions about SOF2
- 01
What does the Lewis structure of SOF2 show?
A common sketch is F–S(=O)–F with one lone pair on S, two on O, and three on each F.
- 02
What is the molecular geometry of SOF2?
SOF2 has a trigonal pyramidal at S molecular geometry. The 3D model shows representative bond angles of 99.4°. These angles come from the displayed model coordinates.
- 03
What is the molar mass of SOF2?
SOF2 has an approximate molar mass of 86.06 g/mol, calculated from its formula using abridged standard atomic weights. Natural isotope variation can change the last digits.
